What is a Domain?

www.dictionary.reference.com says that a domain is: “a group of computers and devices on a network that are administered under the same protocol” or, “the top level in a name, indicating the type of organization, geographical location, or both, and officially designated in the suffix, as .com for commercial enterprises in the U.S.”

There are two components of a domain: the entire domain name (e.g. www.swiftweb.co.ke) and the latter part, the suffix (.co.ke), which also determines which top level domain (TLD) the particular suffix belongs to.

Initially, there existed only a limited number of TLDs , some that you may have come across,  others, perhaps not.

third quarter of 2013.

That is:

.ac.ug - Educational Institution offering Diplomas, Degrees and higher Academic awards

.sc.ug - Primary, secondary and lower educational branches

.ne.ug - Network providers or special equipment for network provision
